Our leadership team has split into two distinct factions - the old guard who built the business and the new, modern hires we brought in to prepare for an exit - and this division is stalling our decision-making. How do we unite these two camps into a single, cohesive team?

A divided leadership team is a failing leadership team. When you have an old guard and a new guard, you have a trust gap. The veterans feel their past contributions are being undervalued, while the new hires feel their modern expertise is being blocked by stubbornness. To unite them, you must establish a shared foundation where everyone is playing by the same rules.

First, realign the entire team around the V/TO. Your core values, core focus, and ten-year target must be shared by everyone. If anyone on either side does not fit the core values or buy into the long-term vision, they do not belong on the leadership team.

Second, rebuild trust through vulnerability. During your next quarterly offsite, spend time on team health exercises. Force both camps to share their backgrounds, their challenges, and what they need from one another to succeed.

Third, enforce the Accountability Chart. Roles and measurables must be absolute. The old guard must respect the specialized skills of the new hires, and the new hires must respect the history and institutional knowledge of the veterans. When issues arise, use the IDS process to solve them objectively based on what is best for the business, not what is best for a faction. A cohesive leadership team requires everyone to pull in the same direction.
