We are committing to a five-year exit runway. How do we structure the gradual transition of the Visionary role on our Accountability Chart so we do not disrupt our market position?

Transitioning the Visionary role over a five-year runway requires a systematic approach to delegation. You cannot simply walk away on day one. Start in year one by identifying the key responsibilities of your current seat. Often, the Visionary is still heavily involved in high-level sales, major vendor relationships, or product R and D. Write these down and map them out. In years two and three, your primary goal is to transition these relationships and responsibilities to members of your leadership team. Use the Accountability Chart to clearly define who will take over each function. If you need to hire a successor or elevate an internal leader to the Integrator or Visionary seat, do it now. This gives them at least two full years to run the business under your mentorship. By year four, your role should shift entirely to advisory and high-level strategy. You should no longer be solving daily problems or running meetings. Use your weekly check-ins with your Integrator to monitor progress, but let them make the final calls. By year five, the business should run seamlessly without you. A buyer looking at your company will see a highly capable leadership team that has a proven track record of operating independently, which commands a premium valuation multiple.
