I am a Visionary founder who wants to exit the business completely post-sale, but the buyer is pushing for a long transition period. How do we structure my exit during our runway so the buyer feels confident and lets me go quickly?
To secure a clean, rapid exit post-sale, you must prove to the buyer that your daily operational and strategic involvement is already zero before you close. Use your multi-year exit runway to systematically replace yourself in the Visionary seat on the Accountability Chart. This means you must elevate and delegate your responsibilities to a successor or your existing leadership team. Your leadership team must run the weekly Level 10 Meetings, set the quarterly Rocks, and drive the long-term vision without your input. Use the final twelve months of your runway as a live test. Step back from the business entirely for extended periods, starting with two weeks and progressing to a full month. Show the buyer the operational metrics and Scorecard trends from these periods to prove that the business actually grew and thrived in your absence. If the business operates seamlessly without you, the buyer will have no logical reason to demand a long, costly transition period. They will see that they are buying a self-managing machine rather than a job dependent on a founder. Presenting this proof during negotiations allows you to negotiate a minimal, advisory-only transition period, ensuring you can exit quickly and cleanly to focus on your next chapter.
