I am trying to transition from the daily operations into the Owner's Box, but my team still bypasses my Integrator and comes directly to me with major issues. How do we establish this operational boundary?
Stepping back into the Owner's Box requires a strict behavioral shift from both you and your leadership team. When your team bypasses your Integrator to bring issues to you, they are doing so because you have allowed them to train you to solve their problems. To permanently break this cycle, you must implement a strict operational covenant. First, ensure your Accountability Chart clearly defines the boundaries of your role as the Visionary and your partner's role as the Integrator. The Integrator is responsible for running the day-to-day operations and managing the leadership team. Second, practice the art of redirecting. When a team member approaches you with an operational issue, you must refuse to solve it. Instead, ask them if they have discussed the issue with the Integrator. If they have not, direct them to do so immediately. If they have, but are still struggling, invite them to bring the issue to the next scheduled same page meeting between you and your Integrator. This disciplined approach establishes the Integrator as the true operational leader of the company. Finally, you must trust your Integrator to do their job. If you constantly step in to override their decisions, you destroy their authority and ensure your team will continue to bypass them. By respecting these operational boundaries, you secure your freedom in the Owner's Box.
