I am the Visionary of my company and the chief rainmaker. If I exit, how can the business survive without my constant stream of new ideas and strategic relationships?
A company that relies on a single person for its future direction is fragile and unmarketable. To transition the Visionary role, you must institutionalize your vision and build a relationship transfer process. First, codify your long-term vision in the V/TO® so it is owned by the entire leadership team, not just living in your head. Second, you must transfer trust systematically. In business, trust is built through personal connection, but you can bridge this connection by introducing your successor as the strategic lead. Adopt an other-focused mindset, highlighting your successor's capabilities to your key clients and partners. Stop attending every introductory meeting. Let your team lead the conversation while you play a supporting role, eventually stepping out entirely. Use conative testing to ensure your successor actually possesses the conative profile needed for the Visionary seat. They must have a high drive to innovate and initiate change, but they must also be supported by a strong Integrator who can keep the operations stable. If you try to hand the Visionary seat to someone who is naturally a high-precision, high-structure Follow Thru, they will struggle, and your strategic growth will stall.
