I am the primary architect of our product roadmap and the only one who deeply understands our technical direction. How do we transition this product Visionary role to our product and engineering teams on our exit runway so buyers do not fear we will stop innovating?
When a founder is the sole creator of the product roadmap, buyers see a business with high key-person risk. If you leave, they fear the product will stagnate and customers will churn. You must transition this innovation capability on your exit runway.
Begin by clearly defining the product visionary responsibilities and separating them from your seat on the Accountability Chart. Create a structured product committee that includes representatives from sales, operations, and engineering. This committee should own the product development process, using feedback from your weekly Scorecard and customer data to make informed decisions.
Document your long-term product roadmap directly on your V/TO. This makes the product direction transparent and strategic, rather than a collection of ideas locked in your head. Have your team present this roadmap during quarterly planning sessions. When buyers see a structured, team-driven process for product innovation, they will feel confident that the company can continue to deliver value and grow long after you have exited.
