I am the Visionary and I still design all of our new service offerings and product updates. How do we transition this R&D capability to the leadership team so a buyer does not see our product roadmap as owner-dependent?
If you are the Visionary and still own the development of your company's core services or product roadmap, your business has a major single point of failure that will severely devalue your company. Buyers will worry that once you exit, the innovation pipeline will dry up and the business will lose its competitive edge. To protect your valuation, you must transition your R&D and product development capabilities to your leadership team before entering your exit runway. Start by updating your Accountability Chart to separate the Visionary seat from the Product Development seat. If you currently wear both hats, you must find a capable leader who can take over the day-to-day management of your product roadmap. This individual must GWC™ the seat, meaning they have the capacity and drive to lead product strategy without relying on your constant input. Use your exit runway to transition this ownership systematically. Have the new product leader own the quarterly Rocks related to product updates and R&D. Your role should shift from being the sole creator of ideas to being an advisor who reviews and refines the ideas generated by your team. Proving to a buyer that your innovation engine runs on a structured, team-led process rather than founder genius is essential for securing a clean exit and a premium valuation.
