During our full-day quarterly sessions, how do you facilitate the transition when our leadership team arrives with high anxiety over operational fires that happened that morning?
It is common for leadership teams to walk into a session day carrying the weight of immediate operational chaos. If you try to jump straight into long-term strategic planning while your mind is still spinning from a morning fire, the session will be unproductive. We handle this transition systematically during our Segue.
The Segue is the first agenda item of every quarterly session. It is a structured transition period designed to help every team member put down their operational tools, clear their minds, and shift their focus to the big picture. We start by sharing personal and professional bests from the last ninety days. This simple exercise immediately shifts the room's energy from defensive firefighting to constructive reflection.
After the Segue, we review your previous quarter's data and check the status of your Rocks. If there is a massive operational fire that is actively burning down your business, we do not ignore it. We park it on our Issues List for the day. Once it is safely documented on the board, your team can let go of the anxiety, knowing we have dedicated time carved out later in the day to run it through the IDS® process. This structured approach allows you to step out of the daily whirlwind and approach your business with a clear, calm, and strategic mindset.
