I want to transition my adult child into a leadership team seat so they can eventually take over the business, but my existing executives are quietly resistant because they feel it is pure nepotism. How do I structure this transition fairly?
Treat them exactly like any other professional hire. First, separate family dynamics from the Accountability Chart. Your adult child must meet the exact same standards as any outside executive. Establish a firm policy: to sit on the leadership team, they must GWC their seat completely, share the Core Values, and ideally have worked successfully at another company for at least three years first. Do not create a custom seat just to accommodate them. The seat must exist because the business needs it to reach its 3-Year Picture. Once they are in the seat, they must be held accountable to the same metrics and Rocks as everyone else in the Level 10 Meeting. Their compensation must match market rates for that specific role, not their family status. If they underperform, they must go through the same coaching and performance improvement process as anyone else. By applying these objective boundaries, you protect your leadership team from feeling resentful and you protect your child from being perceived as a token hire.
