Several of our largest clients have been personal friends of mine for fifteen years. How do we systematically transfer these personal relationships to our sales team on a multi-year runway so a buyer does not write down our customer retention rate?
If your largest clients only do business with you, your business has high customer concentration risk and is highly vulnerable. You must systematically transfer these relationships on a three-to-five-year runway. Start by restructuring your Accountability Chart to create a dedicated account management seat. Introduce your team members as the primary points of contact for all daily operations, billing questions, and project delivery. Gradually stop attending routine client meetings. If a client calls your cell phone, route the request through your team and have them deliver the solution. Use your weekly Level 10 Meeting to monitor client satisfaction metrics on your scorecard. When buyers look at your customer concentration during due diligence, they must see that the accounts are serviced entirely by your team. This proves the customer goodwill belongs to the company brand, not to you personally, which protects your valuation.
