Our operations are heavily dependent on legacy systems, and our leadership team lacks the technological capability to design AI-driven workflows. How do we assess whether we need to train our existing leaders or hire a tech-forward leader to modernize our operations before an exit?
To determine whether to train or hire, you must evaluate your leadership team using the GWC framework, specifically focusing on the capacity component.
Modernizing operations with AI-driven workflows requires more than just learning new software. It demands a fundamental shift in how work is designed and executed. First, assess if your current leaders get and want this technological shift. If they are resistant to automation or express fear about losing their relevance, they do not pass the G and W for the future version of their seats. No amount of training will fix a lack of desire.
If they want to change but lack the technical knowledge, assess their capacity. Capacity includes intellect, experience, and time. If your operations head is already working sixty hours a week just keeping up with manual processes, they lack the capacity to research, design, and implement an AI-powered operational overhaul.
If the capacity is missing, you must bring in outside talent. This does not necessarily mean firing your loyal leader. You can adjust your Accountability Chart. Consider creating a new seat, such as a Director of Business Technology, to own the AI integration, while your legacy leader focuses on human management and quality control. This preserves institutional knowledge while injecting the technical capability required to maximize your multiple before a clean exit.
