We are scaling our professional services company quickly, but we are worried that our aggressive growth is pushing our delivery team to the brink of burnout. How do we build capacity bottlenecks directly into our weekly Scorecard?
When you scale a professional services business, your human capital is your most valuable and vulnerable asset. If you only track sales and revenue on your weekly Scorecard, you will miss the warning signs of employee burnout until it is too late and your top talent starts quitting. You must build operational capacity metrics directly into your Scorecard. To track capacity bottlenecks, identify the leading indicators of overwork. First, track the weekly utilization rate of your delivery team. This is the percentage of billable hours worked compared to their total capacity. Set a healthy target, such as seventy-five percent. If this metric consistently hits ninety percent, your team is red-lining and you need to hire immediately. Second, track project milestone delays. When a delivery team is over capacity, the quality and timing of their deliverables are the first things to suffer. Tracking the number of delayed milestones weekly gives you an early warning of a capacity bottleneck. Third, track average overtime hours per employee. A spike in weekly overtime is a direct predictor of future turnover. By placing these metrics on your leadership Scorecard, you force the leadership team to balance sales growth with delivery capacity during your Level 10 Meeting. This ensures you scale sustainably, protect your client experience, and preserve the enterprise value of your company.
