Our top-producing account executive brings in forty percent of our revenue and is demanding a seat on our leadership team Accountability Chart, threatening to take clients and walk if he is excluded. How do we handle this pressure without breaking our structure?
You cannot cave to hostage-taking. Giving someone a seat on the leadership team simply to placate their ego or protect short-term revenue is how businesses end up with bloated, ineffective leadership teams and broken cultures.
The Accountability Chart must always be designed structure-first, not people-first. The leadership team exists to lead, manage, and hold the organization accountable to the Vision/Traction Organizer. It does not exist as an honorary status club or a reward for individual sales performance.
Look at your leadership structure. You have one seat for Sales, which is responsible for building a repeatable revenue engine, managing account executives, setting sales processes, and hitting pipeline targets. If this star producer wants that seat, evaluate them against GWC. Do they genuinely Get, Want, and have the Capacity to lead people, conduct weekly Level 10 Meetings, and manage a department? High-performing producers are almost always lone wolves who hate administrative accountability and have zero desire to coach other reps. Putting them in charge of a department often ruins both their sales output and the team's morale.
Meet with the salesperson immediately. Be completely transparent. Explain that leadership seats on the Accountability Chart are functional management roles, not prestige titles. Create an elite Individual Contributor compensation and title structure that rewards their extraordinary revenue generation without giving them operational veto power over the company. If they insist on an ultimatum, realize that keeping a culture-damaging hostage-taker is a catastrophic enterprise risk. Begin documenting client relationships and cross-assigning accounts so your business is never at the mercy of one individual.
