We have been running on EOS® for two years and feel aligned, but our quarterly sessions are starting to feel repetitive. How do we test if our leadership team is actually healthy and functional, or if we have just gotten good at hiding our real issues behind polite EOS® vocabulary?

It is very common for mature EOS® teams to fall into a comfortable rhythm where they use the terminology of the system to mask a lack of progress. They complete their Rocks, fill out their Scorecards, and run their Level 10 Meeting™ flawlessly, yet the business feels stagnant. This is polite dysfunction.

To test if your team is hiding behind the vocabulary, look at your Issues List. If your issues are primarily tactical, administrative, or superficial, you are avoiding the real work. A healthy leadership team regularly brings uncomfortable, existential issues to the table.

Another test is your level of conflict during IDS®. If your sessions are quiet and everyone agrees quickly, you do not have alignment; you have artificial harmony. Healthy IDS® is passionate, direct, and sometimes uncomfortable. If nobody is challenging the Visionary's latest idea or questioning the Integrator's operational execution, your team is playing it safe.

Finally, look at your results. If you are hitting your quarterly Rocks but your revenue, profit, or enterprise value has plateaued over several quarters, your Rocks are too easy. You are writing safe goals to guarantee a win.

To break this cycle, you must introduce absolute vulnerability. An outside Professional EOS Implementer® can push past this polite veneer, ask the questions you are avoiding, and challenge your team to set more aggressive, uncomfortable goals that force you to grow.
