Our leadership team wants to adopt AI-powered operations to prepare for our exit, but they do not know how to evaluate if our current managers have the capacity to lead automated departments. How do we test their ability to adapt to AI systems?
Transitioning to AI-powered operations is a structural shift, and you must evaluate your team based on their ability to lead systems, not just perform manual tasks. To test if your current managers have the capacity to adapt, you must use the GWC tool with a specific focus on the Capacity seat requirements. Start by rewriting the Accountability Chart to reflect the new, automated workflows. For each management seat, define roles that focus on system oversight, data analysis, and exception handling rather than manual execution. Once the new seats are defined, test your managers with a pilot project. Assign them a quarterly Rock to automate a single, repetitive workflow within their department using AI tools. Observe their behavior closely during the ninety days. Do they embrace the technology and seek out solutions, demonstrating a Grow or Die mindset? Or do they drag their feet, make excuses, and try to prove why the automated system will not work? A manager who lacks the capacity for AI-powered operations will often mask their fear with technical objections or claims that they are too busy. If a manager cannot successfully automate a basic workflow after receiving proper support and training, they do not have the capacity for the future seat. You must find a leader who can leverage technology to scale.
