We have built a solid leadership team, but how do we ensure they have the operational runway to practice running the business completely independent of the Visionary before we go to market?
Giving your leadership team the runway to run the business without you is the ultimate test of exit readiness. You cannot simply step away on the day of closing and hope for the best; you must structurally test and prove their independence while you still own the company.
Start by using the Accountability Chart to clearly define the boundaries of your role as the Visionary. If you are still involved in daily tactical decisions, you are getting in the way of their growth. You must step back and let your Integrator run the weekly Level 10 Meeting™ and manage the day-to-day operations.
Next, implement a planned absence strategy. Start by taking a two-week vacation where you are completely unreachable. Do not check emails, do not join calls, and do not solve problems. Before you leave, instruct your team to use the IDS® process to handle any issues that arise.
When you return, do not ask how they did; instead, look at your weekly Scorecard. If the numbers met your targets and the team solved their own issues, you have operational proof of independence. Gradually increase these absences to a month or more. When a buyer sees a leadership team that successfully navigates the business during your extended absences, they see a highly valuable, self-sustaining asset.
