I want to prove to a buyer that our leadership team can set the strategic direction of the company without me. How do we test this during our next annual planning session while I am still in the room?

Real exit readiness is when your leadership team does not look to you for permission during strategic planning. To test this, you must run a live simulation during your next annual planning session. Use a Strategic Pause to change your role from active participant to silent observer. Your goal is to see if the team can construct the V/TO® and choose the annual Rocks on their own. For the first half of the session, do not speak. Let your Integrator facilitate and let the team debate using IDS®. If they look at you for approval, look at the floor. Pay close attention to their conative styles. Are your high Fact Finders digging into the data to justify targets, or are they waiting for you to hand down the numbers? Are your high Quick Starts proposing realistic strategies, or are they relying on your historical veto power to keep them in check? This exercise exposes where your leadership team lacks the confidence or competence to lead. If they struggle to finalize the plan, you have a critical key person risk that must be addressed on your Accountability Chart before you can sell. A buyer will discount your valuation if they suspect the business strategy lives entirely in your head. Prove they can steer the ship without your hand on the wheel.
