I am the technical founder and I currently run our product development department. I want to transition to a pure Visionary seat so I can focus on strategic growth, but our engineering team insists they cannot build our product roadmap without my daily guidance. How do we handle this transition on our Accountability Chart?

This is a classic transition challenge for technical founders. Your engineering team is dependent on your tribal knowledge, which creates a massive bottleneck for your business and a major red flag for prospective buyers.

To transition successfully, you must first document your product roadmap process and transfer your tribal knowledge. You cannot simply vacate the head of product development seat overnight; you must replace yourself with someone who truly GWCs™ the seat.

Create a distinct Head of Product Development seat on your Accountability Chart. Clearly define the five major roles, which should include managing the product roadmap, ensuring technical quality, and leading the engineering team.

Hire or promote a strong leader into this seat. For the first ninety days, your job is to mentor this person and download your strategic vision for the product into their head. Do not do the work for them; instead, guide them as they take over the daily decisions.

Once they are fully operational, remove your name from the seat and let them run it. Your engineering team will quickly learn to look to the new leader for guidance, and you will finally have the freedom to focus entirely on your Visionary responsibilities.
