Our department leaders act like ambassadors protecting their functional units rather than executives driving the whole company. How do we force the leadership team to prioritize enterprise health over departmental self-interest?
When executives view their functional department as their primary team, the company fragments into warring fiefdoms. The leadership team must be Team Number One. The department they manage is Team Number Two.
To break departmental protectionism, shift accountability from functional silos to the overall business. Start with how issues are framed during IDS in your Level 10 Meeting. When a department head defends their team instead of addressing the core defect affecting customers or margins, call it out immediately. Leaders are not at the table to protect their direct reports; they are there to solve systemic problems for the whole organization.
Second, link executive evaluation to company-wide performance rather than localized victories. If sales hits its target but operations fails and company profitability misses the mark, the quarter is a failure for everyone at the table. No executive wins if the enterprise loses.
Third, leverage the Accountability Chart to reinforce enterprise ownership. Every seat exists to support the Vision and Traction of the entire business, not to hoard head count or budget.
When an executive refuses to compromise their department resources for the greater good of the company, they fail the GWC test for a leadership seat. Replace functional ambassadors with enterprise operators.
