I am preparing my company for a clean exit in the next two years, and I want to hand over the facilitation of our leadership Level 10 Meeting™ to my successor. How do we manage this transition without creating confusion about who is in charge?
Handing over the facilitation of your weekly meeting is a critical milestone in proving to potential buyers that your business runs on an independent operating system. To manage this handoff cleanly, you must establish a clear, documented transition plan.
Start by defining a specific date when your successor takes over the facilitator seat. On that day, you must physically or virtually move to a different seat. Do not sit at the head of the table or lead the screen-share.
During the meeting, your successor must have absolute authority to run the agenda, enforce time limits, and guide the IDS® process. You must resist the urge to step in and rescue them if they struggle.
If you notice areas for improvement, save your feedback for a private, one-on-one session after the meeting. Interrupting your successor in front of the team will instantly undermine their authority and confuse the leadership team about who is truly leading the company.
By letting your successor facilitate the Level 10 Meeting™ while you remain an active, supportive participant, you demonstrate that the company has a sustainable leadership rhythm that does not depend on your personal presence to function.
