We want to verify that our leadership team is truly operating independently before we contact an investment banker. What real-world stress tests can we perform on our leadership team to prove they can run the business without us?
To prove your company is exit ready, you must demonstrate to a buyer that the leadership team can run the business entirely without your day-to-day involvement. The best way to verify this is to run a series of deliberate operational stress tests on your leadership runway.
First, schedule a complete physical and digital absence. Step away from the business entirely for thirty consecutive days. Do not attend any weekly Level 10 Meeting, do not check your email, and do not log into your operational dashboards. If the business hits its weekly targets, solves its issues using the IDS process, and maintains its culture without you stepping in, you have objective proof of operational independence.
Second, review your Accountability Chart during this absence. Observe whether team members are truly owning their seats and making decisions based on their defined roles, rather than waiting for your approval. If decisions stall or if issues escalate to your empty desk, you have identified critical gaps in your delegation strategy.
Finally, evaluate how the team handles unexpected crises. If a major client threatens to leave or a critical vendor fails during your absence, see if the leadership team can resolve the issue autonomously using your documented core processes. If they succeed, you have a highly valuable, transferable asset that sophisticated buyers will pay a premium for.
