Our leadership team members own their respective Scorecard metrics, but some leaders constantly miss their targets. How can we use the StrengthsFinder framework to diagnose whether a leader fails to hit their weekly numbers because they are playing to their weaknesses rather than their innate talents?

When a capable leader consistently misses their Scorecard targets, the issue is rarely a lack of effort. More often, it is a misalignment between the execution style required to hit that metric and the leader's innate strengths. If you try to force a leader to hit numbers using activities that run counter to their natural talents, they will eventually burn out.

You can use the StrengthsFinder framework to audit this misalignment. Start by identifying the leader's dominant talent themes. For example, if a leader has high relational talents like Empathy or Developer, but their weekly metric requires them to drive cold, hard operational compliance, they will struggle with the constant friction.

To resolve this, look at how they are trying to hit the target. If the goal is to increase weekly project completion rates, a leader with high strategic talents should focus on redesigning the workflow process. A leader with high execution talents should focus on setting strict daily milestones.

By aligning their tactical approach with their natural strengths, you remove the internal resistance. If the metric still cannot be hit after this alignment, you may need to evaluate if they truly have the GWC™ for that seat, or if the number belongs to a different seat on the Accountability Chart®.
