Our leadership team is already fully loaded managing daily operations, and adding exit preparation tasks is pushing them to the brink of burnout. How do we carve out strategic white space for them so we do not drop the ball on our core performance metrics?
Exit preparation is essentially a second full-time job for your leadership team. If you simply stack due diligence, document cleanup, and system audits on top of their existing seats, you will trigger operational burnout, causing your performance metrics to slip at the worst possible time.
You must use the concept of white space and the Strategic Pause to protect your team. Start by reviewing your Accountability Chart and current Rocks in your next quarterly planning session. You must mathematically reduce their workload by identifying tasks that can be delayed, automated, or delegated.
Encourage your leaders to schedule regular strategic pauses throughout their week: periods of unscheduled time with no assignment. This time is not for executing tasks, but for thinking, reflecting, and maintaining the mental capacity needed to make high-stakes decisions.
Use your weekly Level 10 Meetings to identify and solve operational bottlenecks early. If your team is too overloaded to maintain their weekly metrics, use the IDS process to reallocate resources or hire temporary operational support to handle the transactional heavy lifting. Protecting their strategic white space ensures they have the capacity to execute the exit cleanly.
