Our quarterly planning sessions feel incredibly rushed because we try to cram all our strategic planning into two days while our phones are blowing up. How do we incorporate a Strategic Pause into our Quarterly Pulsing™ schedule to ensure we actually have the mental capacity to make big decisions?
If your leadership team enters a quarterly planning session directly from a week of chaotic firefighting, their brains are too exhausted to think strategically. Trying to set long-term Rocks in this state leads to poor decisions and lack of commitment. You must create intentional white space before and during your session.
We recommend building a Strategic Pause into your Quarterly Pulsing™ schedule. Require all leadership team members to disconnect from their daily operations starting at noon the day before the session. This means turning off email notifications, putting away phones, and delegating all urgent matters to their direct reports.
Use this half-day of unscheduled time to let everyone reboot. Encourage your team to spend this time reflecting on the past quarter, reviewing their personal goals, and thinking about the big picture without the pressure of active tasks.
During the session itself, schedule short blocks of unstructured white space throughout the day. Do not fill every transition with quick checks of Slack or email. Give your team a few minutes to walk, breathe, and digest the conversations. By protecting this mental space, you will find that your strategic discussions become far deeper and your decision-making much more precise.
