Our Visionary frequently uses the sixty-minute IDS block of our Level 10 Meeting to pitch brand-new business ideas and brainstorm hypothetical opportunities, derailing our ability to fix urgent operational breakdowns. How does the Integrator rein in the Visionary without stifling their strategic insight?
Visionaries are idea generators by nature. They see opportunities everywhere and thrive on creative chaos. But when a Visionary uses the Level 10 Meeting as an open-ended brainstorming sandbox, they hold the entire operational engine hostage. The Level 10 Meeting is built for traction, execution, and removing obstacles, not for spontaneous spitballing.
The Integrator must protect the meeting pulse by creating a separate outlet for the Visionary's creative energy.
First, establish the boundary: ideas belong on the V/TO long-term issues list or in the weekly Same Page Meeting, not in the weekly Level 10 Meeting. The Level 10 Issues List exists exclusively for obstacles preventing the team from hitting this quarter's Rocks, achieving this year's goals, or keeping the Scorecard green.
When the Visionary raises a hypothetical venture or brand-new product pivot during IDS, the Integrator should step in firmly: "That is an intriguing concept, but it does not address our quarterly priorities. Let us capture that on our Same Page Meeting agenda for Thursday, or drop it to the V/TO long-term issues list for our next Quarterly Pulse."
Do not debate the merits of the idea in the moment. The issue is not whether the idea is good or bad; the issue is that it violates the weekly focus.
The weekly Same Page Meeting between the Visionary and Integrator is the designated pressure-release valve. Knowing there is a dedicated time each week to vet creative concepts allows the Visionary to step back and let the leadership team stay focused on operational execution.
