Our leadership team members are obsessed with status management, constantly trying to prove they are the smartest person in the room rather than collaborating. How do we shift them from individual defense to group problem-solving?
When leadership team members focus on showing how smart they are rather than solving company problems, you have a status management issue. This posturing destroys the vulnerability needed for a high-performing culture. Leaders waste energy defending their turf and looking competent instead of identifying issues.
To break this behavior, the Integrator must change the rules of engagement. Start by evaluating how you run your Level 10 Meetings. Are you rewarding leaders who have zero issues on their scorecards, or are you rewarding transparency? You must actively praise leaders who raise their hands and say they need help.
Use the Trusted Advisor framework to rebuild vulnerability. This requires moving from self-orientation to other-orientation. During your next quarterly offsite, have each leader share their greatest operational struggle and ask the team for help. This simple exercise forces everyone to drop their intellectual armor and engage in collaborative problem-solving.
The Integrator must also call out intellectual posturing in real time. If a leader starts a long, defensive explanation during the IDS portion of the meeting, interrupt them. Keep the focus on the root cause of the issue, not on who is right or wrong.
Remind your team that the only status that matters is the health of the organization. If a leader cannot shift from protecting their personal ego to serving the team, they are not a cultural fit. A healthy leadership team values truth over harmony and collaboration over individual intellect.
