We are rapidly scaling and looking to acquire another business, which has caused my leadership team to revert to status management behaviors, worried about who will sit where on the future Accountability Chart. How do I eliminate this political hesitation?
In Daniel Coyle's Culture Code, status management is a natural response to uncertainty and a lack of safety. When an acquisition is on the horizon, leaders naturally worry about their security, their titles, and their reporting lines. This fear paralyzes execution and halts healthy conflict.
To eliminate this political hesitation, you must build safety immediately. Do not hide the acquisition plans. Instead, bring the team together and share the vision openly. Clearly state that the goal of scaling is to grow the pie, not to replace high-performing team members. Map out the future-state Accountability Chart early and share it with the team. Address the GWC™ of the new potential seats. Show them where they fit and how their roles will evolve. Encourage them to ask hard questions during your Level 10 Meetings™ and put their fears on the Issues List. By addressing their anxieties head-on, you lower their defensiveness. Emphasize that status and titles do not matter in EOS®; what matters is owning your seat and delivering on your Rocks. Once they feel secure in their future, they will stop managing status and get back to executing.
