We have an executive who stays quiet during our weekly Level 10 Meeting, nods along with decisions during IDS, and then complains privately to peers or the Visionary afterward. How do we shut down this passive-aggressive behavior and force them to speak up in the room?
This is artificial harmony, and it kills leadership team health faster than open conflict. When an executive stays silent during IDS® and subsequently campaigns against decisions in hallways or private messaging channels, they are actively violating team accountability.
The cure requires two immediate interventions. First, close the backchannel completely. If this leader approaches the Visionary or another peer to grumble about a resolved issue, that person must shut it down instantly. The only acceptable response is: Did you say that in the Level 10 Meeting? If not, go talk to the Integrator or bring it back next week. If leadership tolerates backchannel venting, they are subsidizing political dysfunction.
Second, the facilitator must call them out live during IDS. When a contentious topic is debated and this executive remains quiet, pause the room and address them directly: You have not weighed in on this, and your seat owns a major piece of the fallout. What is your position? Do not accept a non-committal answer. Force them to state their stance on the record.
At the conclude stage of the meeting, remind the team that silence equals agreement. Once the meeting adjourns, every leader is expected to publicly and privately support the decision 100 percent. If they cannot commit to open debate followed by united alignment, you are looking at a Right Person, Right Seat issue on the Accountability Chart.
