Our leadership team is constantly debating tactical, daily issues during our weekly meetings instead of focusing on strategic growth. How do we break this habit of operational micromanagement so my directors actually start leading their departments instead of just managing tasks?
When your leadership team spends their time discussing minor daily tasks, they are failing to lead. This behavior is a symptom of a weak operational structure. It means your directors do not trust their own teams or they do not understand their roles on the Accountability Chart.
To break this habit, you must strictly enforce the Level 10 Meeting™ agenda. The Level 10 Meeting™ is designed to keep your leadership team focused on high-level operational health and strategic solving. It is not a status update meeting.
During the meeting, use the IDS® process to tackle issues. If a director brings up a tactical, departmental issue, stop them immediately. Ask if this is an issue that their department should be solving on their own. If the answer is yes, push it down to the departmental level.
Your leadership team must learn to delegate and elevate. If they are constantly micromanaging, they are not building internal succession pathways. This creates a massive bottleneck that lowers your enterprise value.
Encourage your directors to build trust and transparency within their own teams. When they trust their managers to handle the daily operations, they will naturally elevate to focusing on company-wide strategic Rocks. This shift is essential to building a healthy, cohesive team that can run the business without your constant intervention.
