Our leadership team has become so obsessed with consensus and avoiding conflict that we spend hours debating minor operational issues in our Level 10 Meetings™ instead of just making a decision. How do we draw the line between healthy debate and operational stagnation?
Consensus is a trap that leads to mediocrity and stagnation. A healthy leadership team does not need complete agreement on every decision; they need alignment and commitment.
To break this bottleneck, look at your Accountability Chart. Every seat must have clear ownership. When an issue arises, the person who owns that seat is the ultimate decision maker.
Use the IDS® process during your Level 10 Meetings™ to discuss the issue. Give everyone a chance to share their perspective, but keep the debate focused. Once the perspectives are on the table, the owner of that seat must make the final call.
The rest of the team must agree to support the decision, even if they initially disagreed. This is the concept of disagree and commit. If you spend too much time trying to make everyone happy, you will stall your company's growth. Trust your leaders to own their seats and make the necessary decisions to move the business forward.
