During IDS, our team constantly rabbit-trails. We start identifying one core issue, but someone mentions a related operational pain point, and within ten minutes the entire room is debating the second topic without ever solving the first. How do we eliminate issue drift?
Rabbit-trailing during IDS® is the single biggest consumer of meeting time. A leader brings up a genuine issue regarding client onboarding delays. Five minutes into the discussion, someone points out that the sales team enters inaccurate CRM data. Suddenly, the room spends twenty minutes debating CRM software architecture, and onboarding delays remain completely unsolved.
To stop issue drift permanently, the Integrator must enforce the strict mechanics of IDS:
- Step one is Identify. The team must dig until everyone agrees on the single, specific root cause. The Integrator must explicitly ask the room: Are we solving onboarding delays, or are we solving CRM data integrity?
- If the secondary topic is legitimate, the Integrator must immediately park it by instructing the scribe to add it to the bottom of the Issues List. Do not allow the room to pursue it in that moment.
- Anyone in the room has the authority and the obligation to call a point of order when debate shifts away from the original issue.
- The team must stay locked on the primary issue until it is driven through Discuss and Solve, resulting in clear seven-day To-Dos.
Solving one root issue completely creates enterprise value. Half-solving four issues while drifting across operational tangents only creates fatigue and leaves systemic friction intact.
