Our team spends half of our IDS time arguing over gut feelings and conflicting assumptions because leaders drop issues onto the Level 10 list without having the necessary data to solve them. How do we stop wasting meeting time on half-baked issues?
Debating an issue without facts is just exchanging emotional opinions. When two leaders spend twenty minutes arguing over whether customer churn is caused by pricing or poor onboarding without having the actual churn data in front of them, they are burning expensive executive payroll on guesswork.
The facilitator must implement the ripe issue rule. When the team prioritizes an issue and it becomes evident within two minutes that the root cause cannot be pinpointed without specific analytics, financial records, or operational audit results, kill the discussion immediately. The issue is not ripe for solving.
The solve for a half-baked issue is simple: assign a single To-Do to the accountable owner to gather the missing data, interview the relevant people, or run the numbers before next week. That owner must return to the next Level 10 Meeting™ with clear facts, a diagnosed root cause, and a recommended solution ready for executive debate.
Do not let the leadership team sit in the room while someone pulls up spreadsheets or runs reports in the background. Move the issue down or off the board until the homework is completed, then tackle the remaining prioritized items on your list. Protecting the sixty minutes of IDS® requires ruthless discipline about what is ready to be solved.
