My co-owner and their sibling constantly bring personal family dynamics and decade-old arguments into our executive meetings, paralyzing the non-family leadership team. How do we stop this dynamic permanently?
Family baggage inside a Level 10 Meeting is toxic. When two related leaders use executive time to settle personal scores, the rest of the leadership team immediately disengages. Non-family executives will not speak candidly or take risks because they know any disagreement risks getting sucked into a domestic crossfire.
You must establish an ironclad operating boundary between the family dynamic and the leadership table.
First, hold a private meeting with the two family members outside the office. Be direct: their unresolved personal friction is paralyzing executive decision-making and damaging company morale. Show them that cracks at their level are tearing the team apart. Remind them that in the room, they are not relatives; they are seat holders on an Accountability Chart with clear responsibilities to the enterprise.
Second, enforce zero tolerance during Level 10 Meetings. As the Integrator or meeting facilitator, you must cut off personal digs, emotional outbursts, or historical grievances the second they surface. Drop the gavel and say: That is personal history, not a business issue. We are here to solve operational problems through IDS.
Third, if they cannot control their dynamic, one of them must step down from the leadership team. If their seats are equal and they cannot govern themselves, the company cannot scale. You cannot sacrifice the psychological safety and focus of your executive team to accommodate domestic dysfunction.
