One of our leaders consistently uses the personal and professional segue to share a win that actually hides a major operational bottleneck, effectively hijacking the transition phase to force an early discussion. How do we stop this back-door agenda setting?
The five-minute personal and professional segue is designed to help your leadership team transition from working in the business to working on the business. It is a vital tool for building trust and alignment. However, when a leader uses this time to introduce a hidden operational bottleneck under the guise of a win, they are bypassing the structure of the Level 10 Meeting™.
This back-door agenda setting must be shut down immediately by the facilitator. The rule for the segue is absolute: no discussion is allowed. Leaders share their personal and professional good news, and the team moves directly to the next agenda item.
If a leader shares a win that is clearly a complex operational issue requiring attention, the facilitator must intervene. The facilitator should say, 'That sounds like a critical point, let's drop that to the Issues List so we can IDS it later in the meeting.' Do not allow anyone to respond, ask questions, or start problem-solving during the segue.
This discipline keeps the transition phase clean and prevents one individual from hijacking the meeting agenda. It also teaches the team to respect the Issues List as the only venue for solving operational problems. By maintaining this boundary, you preserve the integrity of the meeting pulse and ensure that all issues are prioritized and solved in the correct sequence.
