Our weekly scorecard review frequently runs over its five-minute limit because our leaders start telling long stories about why their numbers are off track. How do we stop this storytelling waste and keep our numbers review strictly focused on identifying issues?
The weekly scorecard review is a diagnostic check, not an interrogation or a problem-solving session. When a metric is red, the only acceptable response from the seat owner is dropped to the issues list. There should be absolutely no explanation, defense, or storytelling allowed during the first phase of the Level 10 Meeting™. To enforce this, the facilitator must be relentless. The moment a leader begins to explain why a number is off track, the facilitator must interrupt them and say drop it. The issue is then immediately added to the Issues List for the IDS® portion of the meeting, where it can be discussed in its proper context. This keeps your scorecard review under five minutes and protects the integrity of the meeting agenda. Storytelling is a form of defensive posturing that wastes the valuable time of your entire leadership team. By creating a culture where a red number simply means we have an issue to solve together, you remove the fear of failure. This shifts the team's energy from preparing excuses to actually solving the root cause of the problem during the dedicated IDS® time.
