During our Level 10 Meetings, our leadership team regularly lets the five-minute Segue bleed into fifteen minutes because people tell long, rambling stories about their weekend or share over-detailed personal updates. How do we tighten the Segue to build connection without sacrificing valuable operational time?
The weekly Segue is designed to transition your team from working in the business to working on the business. It builds healthy team connection by sharing a personal and professional best. However, when the Segue turns into a long, rambling story session, it steals valuable minutes from your sixty-minute IDS block, which is where real organizational progress is made. To fix this, the facilitator must enforce a strict, fast-paced boundary. Start the meeting exactly on time and set a physical timer for five minutes. Each leader should share their personal and professional best in thirty seconds or less. This is a headline, not a detailed narrative. If a team member starts telling a long story about their vacation or an elaborate weekend project, the facilitator must politely but firmly cut them off. Use a simple phrase like: Great story, let us hear more about that at lunch, let us keep moving. Building a high-trust leadership team does not require wasting structured meeting time. If your team needs more social connection, schedule a monthly team dinner or coffee. Keep the Level 10 Meeting a highly disciplined, professional environment. This discipline is critical when preparing for an eventual exit, as it demonstrates to your team, and eventually to potential buyers, that your leadership operates with high operational efficiency and respect for time.
