Some of our leadership team members clearly multitask during our virtual Level 10 Meetings, answering emails or checking Slack during sections that do not directly involve them. How do we eliminate this distraction and regain total focus?
Multitasking during a virtual Level 10 Meeting™ is a silent killer of meeting productivity. When leadership team members answer emails, check Slack, or work on unrelated tasks during sections of the meeting that do not directly involve them, they lose track of the conversation, miss critical context, and weaken the collective intelligence of the group during IDS®.
To eliminate this distraction, you must establish a strict, team-wide agreement regarding digital presence. First, enforce a cameras-on policy for the entire ninety minutes. Everyone must be fully visible, which naturally deters people from looking down at their phones or clicking around on other screens.
Second, establish a rule that the Level 10 Meeting™ is a single-screen, single-tab experience. The only window open should be the software or document containing your meeting agenda, Scorecard, and issues list.
If the facilitator notices someone's eyes constantly wandering or detects a delay when a member is asked a question, they must call it out immediately. Use your shared Charter and core values of trust and open communication to address the behavior. Remind the team that their full engagement is required to solve hard problems. If a leader cannot dedicate ninety uninterrupted minutes to their peers once a week, they are violating the team's commitment to execution.
