We have a highly relational team where the segue regularly turns into a therapeutic venting session about general company stress instead of a quick check-in. How do we reset the boundaries?
The check-in segue is critical for transitioning your team from working in the business to working on the business. However, when your segue turns into a therapeutic venting session about organizational stress, it eats the very time you need to solve those problems. You are trading action for emotional exhaustion.
To reset the boundaries of the check-in, the facilitator must enforce the strict definition of a segue. It is a quick share of one personal and one professional best. It is designed to bring positive energy and connection into the room, not to air grievances.
If a team member begins venting or sharing a long story, the facilitator must intervene. A gentle redirect is all it takes. For example, the facilitator can say, it sounds like we have a major issue around team stress, let us drop that to the Issues List so we can IDS® it properly, but for now, what is your professional best?
Use these tactics to keep the segue under five minutes:
- Lead by example. The first person to share should keep their update to thirty seconds.
- Keep the room focused on gratitude and progress.
- Remind the team that the best way to relieve stress is to run an efficient meeting that actually solves their operational roadblocks.
By maintaining this boundary, you preserve the positive energy of the room and protect your ninety minutes.
