Every time I hire or promote someone to our leadership team, I end up choosing people who think exactly like I do. We have great chemistry, but we also have the same blind spots, and we keep making the same operational mistakes. How do I stop hiring my clones?

Hiring your clones is a comfortable trap that kills growth. Entrepreneurs naturally gravitate toward people who share their vision, energy, and communication style. However, a leadership team full of big-picture thinkers will lack the operational discipline, focus, and detail-orientation needed to execute and prepare for an exit.

To break this cycle, you must rely on the Accountability Chart rather than personal chemistry. Before you interview candidates, clearly define the seat's roles, responsibilities, and key measurables. Focus on what the business objectively needs, not who you would enjoy having a beer with.

During the interview process, use the GWC tool objectively. If you are a high-level creative thinker, you likely need a leader who gets, wants, and has the capacity to build detailed processes, analyze data, and manage daily execution. This person should possess strengths that actively balance your natural tendencies in a healthy way.

Include other members of your team in the hiring process and give them veto power based on Core Values and GWC. If a candidate makes you slightly uncomfortable because they ask tough, analytical questions about your messy operations, that is often a sign they are exactly who you need to balance your team and drive real traction.
