Our marketing and sales departments run their own Level 10 Meetings™, but they frequently argue that they cannot solve their issues because they are blocked by our operations department. How do we prevent these departmental meetings from devolving into finger-pointing sessions and instead focus them on what they can actually control?
It is common for departmental Level 10 Meetings™ to turn into venting sessions where team members blame other departments for their own operational bottlenecks. When a marketing or sales team spends eighty minutes complaining about how operations is slowing them down, they have completely missed the point of the weekly pulse.
To stop this unproductive finger-pointing, the facilitator must hold the team to the boundaries of their own Accountability Chart. During the Discuss phase of IDS®, ask the team what specific actions they can take within their own seats to resolve or bypass the issue.
If the blocker is genuinely external and cannot be resolved at the departmental level, the team must not spend twenty minutes complaining about it. Instead, the department head must escalate the issue. This means transferring the blocker directly to the leadership team's Level 10 Meeting™ Issues List.
By establishing a clean process for escalating cross-departmental bottlenecks, you keep the departmental meeting focused on the immediate actions the team actually controls. This discipline keeps the team empowered, prevents victim-mentality thinking, and ensures that cross-functional issues are handled by the leaders who actually have the authority to rewrite the systems and resolve the friction once and for all.
