During our Level 10 Meeting™ Scorecard review, when a metric is red, the metric owner immediately launches into a long, defensive explanation of why it happened, turning our five-minute review into a thirty-minute debate. How do we stop this defense mechanism and push these items to the Issues List instantly?
The Scorecard review segment of your Level 10 Meeting™ is designed to be a quick, diagnostic check-in, not a problem-solving session. You have exactly five minutes to review your numbers. When a metric is off track, the only acceptable response from the owner is a simple drop it to the list.
Launching into defensive explanations is a natural human reaction to a red number, but it completely derails the meeting momentum. To stop this defense mechanism, the facilitator must enforce a strict, zero-debate rule during the first portion of the agenda.
When a metric is missed, the facilitator should ask the owner if they can get it back on track this week. If the answer is no, the facilitator must immediately write the metric on the Issues List and move to the next line item on the Scorecard. Do not allow any discussion, explanations, or excuses. If the owner starts explaining, the facilitator must gently but firmly interrupt and say we will IDS® that later.
This discipline removes the emotional sting of a missed metric. It teaches the team that a red number is not a personal failure, but simply an operational issue that needs to be solved systematically during the designated ninety-minute block. By keeping your Scorecard review purely data-driven, you protect your valuable meeting time for actual problem-solving during the IDS® portion.
