Our leadership team is disciplined about reporting scorecard numbers, but we spend half of our Level 10 Meeting arguing over why a number is red rather than dropping it to the Issues List. How do we break this bad habit and keep our data review efficient?

The scorecard review in your Level 10 Meeting™ should take less than five minutes. It is a time for reporting data, not for solving problems or giving explanations. When your team starts explaining why a number is red, they are wasting precious meeting time and avoiding true accountability.

To break this habit, enforce a strict rule during the scorecard review: the owner of a red metric may only say the number, and then say drop it. They should not explain, apologize, or rationalize. If the number is off track, it simply gets dropped to the Issues List.

During the IDS® portion of your meeting, you will have plenty of time to identify, discuss, and solve the issue. This is where you uncover the root cause of the red number and assign a concrete action item to fix it. This keeps your scorecard review fast, visual, and objective.

By keeping problem-solving out of the scorecard review, you maintain a high-tempo meeting and keep your team focused on the facts. It also removes the emotional defense mechanisms that slow down leadership teams. Run your scorecard clean, drop the red numbers without discussion, and solve them during IDS®.
