As an owner preparing for a clean exit, I want to step back, but during our Level 10 Meetings™ I find myself constantly jumping in to solve problems because our Integrator is still too slow to drive the IDS® process. How do I step into the Owner's Box without letting our meeting effectiveness collapse?
As an owner preparing for a clean exit, your tendency to step in and solve problems during the Level 10 Meeting™ is actually stalling your team's development. Every time you rescue your Integrator or department heads during IDS®, you reinforce their operational dependency on you. To successfully transition to the Owner's Box, you must learn to sit on your hands and allow your team to struggle through the process. Your role in the weekly meeting is to act as a guide and a guardian of the V/TO®, not the primary problem solver. If your Integrator is slow to drive the IDS® process, do not take over. Instead, schedule a separate Same Page meeting to align on their facilitation roles and offer constructive feedback. During the Level 10 Meeting™ itself, practice remaining silent until the team has fully explored an issue. When you do speak, ask clarifying questions that lead them to the answer rather than dictating the solution yourself. This builds their operational confidence and proves that the business can run and resolve conflicts without your constant intervention. Remember, a buyer is purchasing a self-sustaining system, not a business that relies on the owner to rescue it every Tuesday morning.
