I have my spouse running HR on the leadership team. The team is hesitant to raise issues about our people strategy because they fear anything said will go straight to my pillow. How do we draw a hard line between family and business operations?
Running a business with your spouse can be highly rewarding, but it creates a massive trust barrier if not managed with extreme discipline. If your leadership team believes that criticizing your HR strategy is equivalent to criticizing your marriage, they will practice status management and retreat into artificial harmony.
You must establish an ironclad boundary between the business and your personal life. Start by addressing this elephant in the room during your next Level 10 Meeting. Acknowledge the team's concern directly. State clearly that your spouse holds the HR seat because of their GWC, not their marriage certificate, and that they are subject to the same accountability as everyone else.
Next, change the reporting structure on your Accountability Chart. If your spouse currently reports to you as the Visionary or Integrator, transition that reporting line. Have your spouse report to a neutral executive, or establish a clear protocol where performance reviews and personnel issues are handled through a formalized, objective system.
Finally, enforce a strict rule of no business talk at home. This protects both your marriage and your company's operational integrity. When your team sees that you and your spouse can disagree constructively in meetings and that feedback is handled professionally, the fear will dissipate, and healthy conflict will return.
