This failure happens because engineering and product management require fundamentally different mindsets. Engineering is about how to build: architecture, code hygiene, system resilience, and deployment velocity. Product management is about what to build and why: market validation, user problem discovery, economic viability, and feature prioritization. When one person holds both, the urgent demands of technical maintenance almost always crush forward-looking product strategy.

To split these seats cleanly on your Accountability Chart, separate the responsibilities into two independent boxes reporting to the Integrator:

For the Product Director seat, define the five roles around market alignment:
- Market research, customer discovery, and competitive analysis
- Product strategy and vision roadmap
- Defining feature requirements and commercial success criteria
- Cross-functional alignment across sales, marketing, and operations
- Product release ROI and user adoption metrics

For the Technology or Engineering Director seat, define the five roles around execution:
- Technical architecture, system infrastructure, and data security
- Development team velocity and code quality
- Engineering resource allocation and sprint execution
- Technical debt management and scalability
- System reliability, uptime, and incident resolution

Do not allow a dual-reporting matrix. The Product seat decides what problems to solve and sets the roadmap priorities. The Engineering seat determines technical feasibility, sizing, and execution. If disagreements arise over tradeoffs, they do not stall out in engineering. The two leaders bring the issue to their weekly Level 10 Meeting™ and IDS® it with the Integrator.
