We are a small team of seven people and we feel like our Accountability Chart is making our daily operations too rigid because everyone has to wear multiple hats anyway. How do we maintain operational flexibility while using this tool?
A small team of seven people does not need a complex Accountability Chart, but you do need structural clarity. The biggest mistake small teams make is assuming that wearing multiple hats means you cannot have clear accountability.
On your Accountability Chart, you must design the structure your business needs to operate effectively, regardless of your current head count. This usually results in a standard structure with five to seven key seats.
In a seven-person company, it is completely normal for one person to sit in multiple seats. For example, you might sit in the Visionary, Sales, and Marketing seats simultaneously.
The rule is simple. When you are sitting in a seat, you must fully GWC™ that seat and be held accountable for its roles and metrics. You must not allow your responsibilities in one seat to excuse poor performance in another.
As you scale, this structure makes hiring simple. When you have the budget to hire, you do not create a new seat. You simply vacate one of the seats you are currently holding and place the new hire into it. This keeps your team flexible while maintaining absolute clarity.
