My sibling wants a seat on our leadership team because they believe it is their birthright as a co-owner, but our current Accountability Chart is full and they do not GWC™ any of the existing leadership seats. How do I handle this family pressure without fracturing our holiday dinners?

Running a family business requires absolute clarity between family relationships and business structure. When a sibling demands a leadership seat based on birthright, you must hold the line. If you create a seat on the Accountability Chart just to keep the peace at home, you will instantly destroy the meritocracy of your entire company. Your non-family executives will see the nepotistic move and immediately disengage.

Explain to your sibling that on the Accountability Chart, every seat must have a clear purpose that drives the company forward. Walk them through the specific roles and responsibilities of the leadership team. Ask them to objectively evaluate themselves against the GWC™ criteria for any open positions. If there are no open seats, or if they do not GWC™ the roles, the answer is a firm no.

Help them understand that their role as a shareholder or family member is completely separate from operating the business. You can establish a family council or regular shareholder meetings to give them a voice in the high-level vision, but the leadership team must remain a sacred space reserved only for those who are fully capable of executing the daily strategy.
