Our leadership team spends almost all of our IDS time solving minor operational fires and resolving immediate customer complaints rather than pursuing high-yield growth opportunities. How do we shift our collective focus from firefighting to executing our strategic goals?
A leadership team that spends all its time solving problems is merely restoring normality, not driving growth. Business results exist only on the outside, in the market and with your customers, while only costs and problems exist on the inside. To scale, you must systematically shift your resources from solving problems to exploiting opportunities.
First, audit your Issues List during your Level 10 Meeting. If your list is dominated by minor operational hiccups, push those issues down to departmental meetings where they belong. The leadership team should only IDS issues that directly impact the overall business health, the V/TO, or company-wide Rocks.
Second, allocate your resources with intensity and rigor. Identify the high-yield growth opportunities in your market and align your quarterly Rocks specifically to pursue them. When planning your quarters, commit to at least one major strategic initiative that expands your unique contributions to the market, even if it means leaving minor operational inconveniences unresolved.
Third, change the mindset of your directors. Coach them to view every operational challenge not as a standalone fire to be put out, but as an indicator of a structural gap. Fix the system, not the symptom.
By raising the bar for what qualifies as a leadership-level issue, you force your team to elevate their thinking. Stop letting the urgent crowd out the important, and focus your collective energy on market leadership.
