Our leadership team members are consistently missing their Scorecard numbers but always have a reasonable excuse for why it happened. How do we shift our culture from excuse-making to true accountability?
A culture of excuses is a sign that your Scorecard metrics are not truly owned or that your team lacks the discipline of accountability. When a leader misses a weekly target, they must own the result without giving a long explanation.
To change this, you must first ensure that every metric on your Scorecard is assigned to a single seat on your Accountability Chart. That seat owner must have total control over the activities that drive that metric. If they do not, you are measuring the wrong thing or the seat is poorly defined.
During your Level 10 Meeting™, the rule is simple: when a number is missed, the owner says off track, and it goes on the Issues List. There is no discussion allowed during the Scorecard review.
When you get to the IDS® portion of the meeting, the focus must be on solving the problem, not listening to excuses. The owner must present a plan to get the number back on track. If they consistently miss their numbers and offer excuses, you must evaluate whether they have the GWC™ (Get it, Want it, Capacity) for that seat. Accountability means owning the outcome, not just the effort.
