Our leadership team is spending too much time micromanaging how employees use AI tools, writing long lists of step-by-step instructions. How do we step back and manage our operations based on strategic outcomes rather than tool usage?
To stop micromanaging your team's tech adoption, you must shift your leadership behavior. Leaders often fall into the trap of telling people exactly how to execute their daily work, which is exhausting and slows down your operation. Instead, use the EOS® framework to articulate a clear vision and strategic plan on your V/TO®, and then empower your team to develop the how.
Start by defining clear, measurable outcomes for each seat on your Accountability Chart. These outcomes should be reflected in your weekly Scorecard metrics and quarterly Rocks. For example, instead of mandating that your marketing manager spend two hours a day using a specific AI writing tool, set a Rock to increase qualified leads by twenty percent while maintaining the current budget.
Once the target is clear, let the owner of that seat leverage AI in whatever way makes them most efficient. They are the ones doing the work, and they are best positioned to find the most effective tools. Your job as a leader is to ensure they GWC™ their seat and have the support they need to hit their targets. By managing to outcomes rather than processes, you foster an entrepreneurial culture where employees proactively adopt AI to hit their goals, freeing you to focus on the strategic direction of the business.
